Biography:

In 1988 I received the PhD in mathematics from Southern Illinois University. My dissertation was in the algebraic theory of quadratic forms over a field. My adviser was Robert Fitzgerald. I taught mathematics at the college level until joining the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) as a Mathematical Statistician in 1995. Until retiring from NASS in January of 2018, I taught an average of one course a semester in mathematics, statistics or operations research as an adjunct instructor. Most recently, I taught with the department of statistics at George Washington University, in Washington, DC. My work at NASS included many areas of applied statistics, including developing predictive models for crop yields, imputation, composite estimation, and the use of optimization techniques in sample design.

My current research is on the use of numerical techniques to anticipate the level of precision for estimates resulting from a complex sample design, and the application of optimization theory to sample design. I am also interested in the role of algebra in the foundations of mathematical physics, and I enjoy finding synergies between disparate branches of mathematics.

I grew up on a farm outside Cape Girardeau; attended Southeast Missouri State and the University of Missouri, and have taught at both Southwest Missouri State University and Southeast Missouri State. Our son is a first year law student at Mizzou. Missouri is my home.
