Abstract. To verify certain finiteness conditions on the ideals of a commutative rings, it suffices to test only the prime ideals.  Using freshman calculus, we will construct an example of a commutative ring showing that this “prime ideal principle” cannot be extended much further.  This is an expository talk geared toward graduate students; it will assume only a bit of calculus and a bit of commutative ring theory.
