Parallel Real-Time Computing with applications in Earthquake Engineering

Abstract: Real-time systems rely on precise timing to provide reliable operation, but these timing constraints can make it difficult to exploit parallelization. A chief concern is that using parallel execution will introduce timing uncertainty to a system, and that these variations could wreck the accuracy and stability of tightly intertwined cyber-physical systems. Even though multi-core processors are now ubiquitous, these concerns deny such applications access to untapped computational potential.


In this talk I will describe how to execute parallel programs with time constraints, and how this is used to enable an enhanced structural validation technique known as Real-Time Hybrid Simulation (RTHS).  RTHS allows for the efficient and cost-effective testing of novel structural components by coupling a structural simulation and an experimental specimen through sensing and actuation. This allows experimenters to simulate mundane structural elements and instead focus their time and resources on structural unknowns, resulting in more efficient and comprehensive structural validation.
