The primary source is the seminal 1963 differential-topology article, "Groups of homotopy spheres," by Michel Kervaire and John Milnor.

Gerrit Smith will finish Section 6.  Given a highly connected parallelizable manifold of dimension 4m+3 whose middle homology is all torsion, he will show how to do parallelizable surgery to produce a contractible manifold.  The final part of the analysis of the effect of surgery involves the Q/Z-valued torsion linking form.
