The Escher quote at the top of page is something I found while looking at the Escher collection in the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. There's more, before the part I used:
Man creates for himself an extremely superficial picture of the three dimensional world in which he lives, for none of his senses can help him penetrate the surface of matter.
